Metro Manila – Workers from 3 of the biggest companies in Southern Tagalog stormed different government agencies today, May 27.
Some 200 Southern Tagalog workers, through the initiative of Pagkakaisa ng Manggagawa sa Timog Katagalugan – Kilusang Mayo Uno (Solidarity of Workers in Southern Tagalog – May First Movement), rallied various government offices to condemn the extensive connivance of local and international government units with the Big 3 capitalists regarding successive illegal closures and dismissals.
At about 6 in the morning, these workers from Carina Apparel, Inc., Hoya Glass Disk Philippines, and NXP Semiconductors Inc., assembled at the picket line of PhilSteel Workers Union – OLALIA – KMU in Cabuyao, Laguna.
Workers and trade union supporters surged the national offices of the Japanese Embassy, Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), and the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE).
In front the PEZA, workers from the Big3 union busting companies, burned a replica of the PEZA building to show their gravest disgust on the agency. PEZA and DoLE are the biggest backers of the Big3 union busters in implementing anti-worker policies and the destroying of workers unions.
Carina Apparel Inc. illegally closed last February 14 leaving 3,600 workers unpaid and jobless. Hoya Glass Disk Philippines, 6 days after the workers union was registered and a day before the International Labor Day, illegally closed and forced workers into their separation payments, 2,600 workers are then left with no jobs. Meanwhile in NXP Semiconductors Inc., 24 union leaders were illegally dismissed from work due to ‘illegal strike.’
Both Carina Apparel Inc. and NXP Semiconductors Inc. before the tragic events are scheduled to have their Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations with the workers unions. Whilst in Hoya Glass Disk, workers learned that the management filed for a ‘notice of cessation from operations’ and not a ‘notice of closure,’ contract agencies are now hiring contract workers for the reopening of Hoya.
“These anti-worker measures by the capitalists Carina, Hoya, and NXP are clear evidences of blatant union busting and retraction from the CBA negotiations. The workers plea for a living wage and regularization from work, the capitalists won’t agree and made irrational actions to stop the workers from fighting for their rights.” Hermie Marasigan, PAMANTIK spokesperson, said.
Workers and their supporters from ST also stormed the US Embassy and House of Representatives to impart their highest opposition against the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) and impeding Charter Change. The workers believe that the EDCA and ChaCha will lead to further vulnerability from wars not favor to the Philippines and to legality of 100% foreign monocapitalists invasion on the different industries in the country.
“This Big3 mobilization leads-off to series of mobilizations against the Big3 union busters. From Southern Tagalog to the National Capital Region, more and more workers will join different activities, from mass actions to national strikes to end trade union repression. Our fight against trade union repression in ST does not end here – until there is a puppet government to the imperialist US and foreign monocapitalists, workers will struggle and triumph for national democracy and industriaization.” Ended Marasigan. ###
